Forest elephants love to hang out together in forest clearings called bais. The word “bai” comes from the Aka language of the pygmies in Central Africa and means “where the animals eat.” These bais also provide an excellent source of minerals for the elephants.
The most famous bai is the Dzanga Bai in the Central African Republic. The bai is 820 ft by 1,600 ft (think 5 football fields!). Through the middle runs a stream, the Dzanga. Up to 100 elephants gather here every day!
